News about Jack Posobiec

The latest conservative media figure to gain access to the White House from the Trump administration is a far-right online activist from the United States who is credited with first sharing on Twitter stolen emails from centrist Emmanuel Macron’s French presidential campaign.

Attending Tuesday’s daily press briefing was Jack Posobiec, a Washington-based writer for Rebel Media, a Canadian online platform for political and social news commentary. Posobiec later broadcast video from the White House grounds with supportive comments about President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Posobiec told Reuters he applied for a permanent permit after initially receiving temporary credentials from the White House in early April. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Since the revelation of Macron’s emails, cybersecurity experts, minority Democrats and some US intelligence officials have expressed growing concern about possible links between Russian organizations, including their spy agencies, and far-right media figures in the United States who they suspect involved in Russian attempts to influence the election.

This week, two US intelligence officials told Reuters they were increasingly confident that hackers linked to the Russian government interfered in the French election.

On Sunday, Macron easily defeated far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, who has supported Russian policy in Ukraine and wants to kick France out of the European Union.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign was hacked, and US intelligence agencies concluded it was done as part of a Russian-backed effort to help Republican candidate Donald Trump win the presidential election. Russia has denied hacking or meddling in the French or US elections.

Posobiec revealed to Reuters that he shared information about the Macron leak that he discovered on social media platform 4chan using his Twitter account. In a private conversation on Twitter, he denied being connected to far-right media and insisted he had no connection to the Russian government.

Posobiec first used the hashtag #MacronLeaks on Twitter, according to security researchers, just after roughly 10GB of data was posted on Pastebin, a website that allows anonymous sharing of documents.

William Craddick, creator and executive editor of Disobedient Media, and Posobiec are friends on social media. According to Chris Doman, a British researcher at the cyber security firm AlienVault, the two appeared to have anticipated Macron’s revelations.

According to Doman, Prosobiec and Craddick began posting on Twitter on Friday indications that there would be a substantial amount of leaked Macron documents. 22 minutes before uploading to Pastebin, Disobedient Media tweeted warning users to “Fully prepare for a major leak of information about Emmanuel Macron and his close associates. Guys, this is serious business.

The media access granted to Posobiec is the latest for a prominent member of the alt-right, a loosely organized movement that espouses right-wing ideals including white nationalism.

Credentials were also issued to Mike Cernovich, who had a substantial online following and ran a website with pro-Trump and anti-Clinton content.

Posobiec’s tweets have been fueled by Roger Stone, a staunch Trump supporter since at least late September. Cernovich also got a lot of support from Stone.

Stone drew criticism for tweeting that WikiLeaks had damaging Clinton campaign emails before the anti-secrecy group disclosed them. Stone allegedly influenced Trump’s decision to fire Comey, according to CNN on Tuesday. Trump claimed the information was false.

Lawyer and media celebrity Ezra Levant created the Canadian conservative website Rebel Media in February 2015 as a subscription-based business. (Mark Hosenball, Joseph Menn, Eric Auchard, Morgan Sharp and Dustin Volz contributed to this report; Jonathan Weber and Grant McCool edited it.)
