MTV recently launched MTV Exhibition: In search of the next great artist March 3, 2023 New reality competition show pits seven American artists against each other for a chance to have their work exhibited at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden and win a $100,000 cash prize.
Jamaal Barber is one of the contestants on the show. Jamaal’s vivid engravings of African individuals illustrate the diversity of black cultural manifestations. According to Jamaal, these motifs, such as hair texture and textile patterns, are cultural symbols that shape how blackness is perceived by the public.
“I’m excited to be a part of this show with a great group of amazing performers,” Jamaal said. “The opportunity to be associated with an institution like Hirshhorn is worth it in and of itself. I always want to push myself to the next level, and this is definitely going to the next level.”
Contestants joining the show are Jennifer Warren, Frank Buffalo Hyde, Clare Kambhu, Misha Kahn, Jillian Mayer, and Baseera Khan.
The weekly orders will be motivated by the Hirshhorn collection thanks to this collaboration. Along with MTV News’ Dometi Pongo, Hirshhorn director Melissa Chiu will co-host the show.
“Our partnership with MTV and the Smithsonian Channel connects Hirshhorn’s collection and spirit of art for everyone with a national audience wherever they are, at home or on screen,” said Melissa. “Documentary series invite viewers to witness how artists turn ideas into concrete, original responses.”
Melissa also hopes the series will highlight the importance of art-making for a broader audience: “Over six episodes, this series will feature seven emerging artists from across the country, documenting their creative process in real time. It emphasizes the importance of the artist’s role in society.”
In early March 2023, Jamaal announced: “Tonight is the night! Catch your guy on MTV’s The Exhibit at 9pm! Check out the latest episode of Studio Noize where I tell you what I think.”
Barber Jamaal’s career
Jamaal Barber has been working at JBarberStudio since 2005. He previously worked as a graphic designer at APCO Graphics from 2005 to 2014. He has always been drawn to beautiful images and detailed work in illustrated books and comics. He soon began creating his own images of him on the back of his elementary school textbooks and other available materials. After reading about Romare Bearden’s legacy and life in high school, he finally followed his desire to pursue a career in art.
In 2013, Jamaal began experimenting with printmaking and decided to make it his main focus after witnessing a silkscreen demonstration at a nearby art gallery. His mixed media etchings and woodcuts are on display at the ZuCot gallery. The Decatur Festival of the Arts, the Atlanta Print Biennial Exhibit, and other local art shows have also featured them. The New York Times, Penguin Random House, Black Art in America, Twitter, and Emory University are just a few of the organizations Jamaal has worked for.

The artist has a master’s degree in graphic arts from Georgia State University. He received his Bachelor of Communication Arts in Graphic Design, Illustration and Painting in 2003 from East Carolina University.
