Janani Krishnan-Jha is thrilled to be a part of Survivor 45 and hailed it as one of her childhood dreams.
Speaking to EW, Janani shared the following: “Growing up as a kid who always gravitated toward an adventure novel, I always dreamed of one day going on my own epic quest. When I first watched Survivor, I knew this was the quest I was waiting for. I’ve always looked up to people who have played this game — they’re risk-takers, strong leaders who think with their gut and adapt quickly to obstacles; they embody the qualities I strive to have in my life. I don’t take the opportunity to play this game lightly, they say this game changes you and challenges you, and I’m up for the challenge.”
Janani is adaptable and has competed in “competitive wordplay, debating, the music industry—the same way: first quietly observing, then fitting into the gaps to carve out my own space.” She believes that these qualities will come in handy to ensure victory this season.
Speaking about the life experiences that prepared her, Janani shared that she turned down early admission to Harvard Law School to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter.
“All my life I have been preparing for a legal career because up until that moment I felt that this was what was expected of me. I faced pressure from my family and community to follow a certain path, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized I was running out of time to live life on my own terms,” she added. “Moving to LA and trying to start a music career felt like starting over — I was coming into this cutthroat industry with no experience and had to learn everything very quickly. That experience reminds me very much of what my fellow castaways and I will do.”
As for her winning contestant she can relate to Janani named Parvati and hailed her as her role model. Then the non-winner was Maryanne for “how she lay low and let people dismiss her as a threat until the end, when she revealed herself to be a strategic mastermind with an almost mathematically methodical understanding of the dynamics of the game. I will aim for a similar position at the start of the game — I will not shy away from my loud personality and hide my observations about other players until the moment is right.”
Speaking about alliance partners and the attributes they require, Janani added, “It’s also important to me that my allies feel comfortable following the natural ebb and flow of the game; not playing too hard when you don’t have to, but still being able to make bold moves when the time calls for it.”
Ahead of the premiere, J Maya stated, “A little life update: I got to go on the adventure I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid!!!!! You can watch me this fall on Survivor 45.”

Janani Krishnan-Jha is an aspiring Indian-American musician who is also equally smart. Her stage name is J Maya. She released her debut single Achilles heelwhich generated over 1 million streams worldwide within a month of its release in January 2021.
Moreover, she is also signed to Expand Music as their second artist after the hugely successful Conan Gray and is in talks with the world’s biggest labels for a release deal. In 2022, she also released an EP entitled Poetic License, aptly named Maya, who creates worlds of her own making.

Harini Krishnan and Vikas Jha are the parents of Survivor contestant Janani Krishnan-Jha. Her parents were married in the Malibu Temple in Los Angeles surrounded by family and friends. In June 2023, they celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary.
Her mother, Harini, is an Indian-American Democratic organizer who is passionate about gender equality, civil rights, public education and the arts, and especially about electing more women and women of color to all levels of office.
A former lead volunteer organizer for Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2019 California presidential campaign, Harini co-founded NorCal Joyful Warriors for Joe and Kamala in early 2020, was selected as a Biden delegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, and was featured in several videos at the historic convention. Harini was also a founding member of the Kamal Harris for the People of South Asia Finance Council and a member of the National Finance Committee of Vice President Harris and President Biden’s presidential campaign.

Talking about her biggest inspiration, Janani mentioned her grandmother Annapurna Krishnan. The California artist said, “My grandmother, my Paatti. When she was 16, she climbed Mount Kanchenjunga with Tenzing Norgay (one of the first people to summit Mr. Everest), becoming the first South Indian woman in history to do so. For her bravery, the Indian government awarded her with an ice ax medal. While the achievement itself is remarkable, her unwillingness to accept the limitations others place on her is what truly inspires me.”
Vikas is the founder and CEO of Radiance Commerce. Prior to that, he worked at Google as Director of Engineering, Display Advertising. He attended the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi and UCAL where he received his MSc and PhD in Computer Science.
Janani has one sister named Abhaya Krishnan-Jha. She worked as a curriculum developer and program manager for the ImmuneCraft summer program. Abhaya graduated from San Mateo High School in 2018 and from the University of Southern California in 2022.
