Japanese city bans people from walking on escalators. Here’s why

Nagoya, a city in Japan has passed a law that prohibits people from walking on escalators. Yes, you read that right. A ban on walking on escalators went into effect in Nagoya on October 1 in an effort to reduce accidents such as falls.

In Japan, it is customary for passengers to stand still on the left side of the escalator while leaving the right side open for passengers to get on or off.

So, to prevent this, the regulation calls for people to stop moving while using the escalator, whether they are standing on the left or the right. Train stations, businesses and other entities that control escalators must also warn visitors of this rule, reports The Mainichi. This regulation is the second of its kind in Japan. The first came in the eastern Japanese prefecture of Saitama in 2021.

According to Japan Today, the city of Nagoya is advertising the new law on TV and posting flyers about it at major train stations. In the recent past, there have been several incidents of passengers speeding up and down escalators and causing accidents. In addition, there were numerous reports of bags being stolen and people fleeing the scene.
