The Butterfly House provides assessment and treatment assistance to children who have experienced neglect, sexual or physical abuse. According to its director Amy Yow, the organization helped 280 children in Stanly last year, up 30% from any previous year.

Before a group of about 200 people, Schuett described how, when she was eight years old, on August 10, 1990, a stranger kidnapped her from her apartment in Dickinson, Texas. He covered her mouth and nose as she tried to scream.

Schuett testified that he took her to a wooded area and sexually assaulted her there. She broke down. She was lying naked on top of an anthill when she woke up, her throat slashed from ear to ear. “I prayed because I knew I was going to die,” she says.
Some children saw her playing hide and seek after being in the field for nearly 12 hours and rushed her to the hospital. Although unable to speak, Schuett was able to describe his attacker in writing, and composite sketches of the two were created.
Doctors then told her she would never be able to speak again. Her voice returned during her two-week hospital stay despite their diagnosis. She resisted the attacker’s attempts to intimidate her in silence.
For many years, Schuett’s case remained unsolved despite the great efforts of many investigators. During that time, she did not lose hope. Schuett relentlessly recounts the kidnapping and murder plot in her restored voice. She created her own website and shares her story with anyone who wants to listen.
The case investigators, Dickinson Police Detective Tim Cromie and Houston FBI Agent Richard Rennison, recalled a letter Schuett left behind shortly after the attack that read, “His name is Dennis.” After Bradford was taken into custody, Rennison and Cromie convinced him to confess to kidnapping, rape, and plotting to kill Schuett. Months before the trial was scheduled to begin, in May 2010, Schuett received what she described as “the worst phone call of her life”.

“I put a lot of effort into remembering every detail. “I wanted the chance to testify against him in court and read the victim impact statement,” she said. “I want to see this to the end.” Exactly 20 years after her abduction, several months later, on August 10, 2010, she visited Bradford Cemetery and read the victim impact report.
“You know, I can’t help but wonder if he heard everything I said,” she mumbled as she read it. Suddenly, a fire ant bit her leg, which she took as a sign from God that Bradford must have heard her.
Schuett’s story has come to a satisfying conclusion. Doctors gave her a grim prognosis that she would not be able to get pregnant, but she overcame the difficulty and gave birth to Jenna and Jonah.
