When it comes to Johan Petr’s professional basketball career, he started after joining ElanBearnais Pau-Orthez. He signed with the Seattle SuperSonics of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2005, then with the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2009, Petro moved to the Denver Nuggets, but the Nuggets rejected the deal, leaving him a free agent. He quickly resigned on August 27, 2009. Petro signed a three-year contract with the New Jersey Nets on July 10, 2010, and was traded to the Atlanta Hawks on July 11, 2013.
He signed a one-year contract with Zhejiang Guangsha but left in January 2014. In February 2013, he signed a contract with French club Limoges CSP, however, he quickly left the team and moved to Florida to recover from an illness. He was also part of the French team that won EuroBasket 2013. Petro joined Mets de Guaynab from Baloncesto Superior Nacional after recovering from injuries, however, he was released on April 14, 2015.
