Meet John Ruff, the subject of Hulu Have you seen this man?
Hulu’s three-part true crime documentary series “Have You Seen This Man?” premiered on March 24, 2022, and dealt with the case of John Ruff, a con man who pocketed some $350 million.
John’s deception was deceptive in its simplicity. He teamed up with Edward J. Reiners, former CEO Edward J. Reiners of the Phillip Morris tobacco company, and concocted a top-secret research bogus story called “Project Star” to develop smokeless cigarettes in the early 1990s.
As for John’s role in this project, he allegedly supplied computer hardware and consulting services.
So, as millions poured out of the banks, John spent some of it on himself, while the rest was supposedly gambled on the stock market.
John’s fraudulent scheme came to light in the late 1990s. He was then arrested and sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison, with $10 million bail. But surprisingly, he managed to convince several family members to lend him the bail amount and he walked free.
After John was paroled, he never reported to the prison.
Where is John Ruffo now?
Nobody knows where John Ruffo is now. The man has been placed on the US Marshals’ 15 Most Wanted Fugitives list, and some officials say he may be living abroad, possibly in the Caribbean, South America or Europe.
Additionally, some believed the scammer had previous ties to Italy, Greece and Switzerland. So he could have been anywhere.
In addition, a reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for any information leading to the arrest of the convicted fraudster.
John was last seen in 1998 withdrawing $600 from an ATM in Queens, New York. He then left his car in the long-term parking lot at John F. Kennedy International Airport, rented a Ford Taurus, and disappeared.

John Ruff’s family
John Ruffo may be a con man, but he comes from a humble Italian-American family. No wonder they were there to help him when he was convicted, even giving his house as collateral.
Unfortunately, John still decided to run away knowing that his wife, mother and relatives would lose their homes.
Even John’s lawyer, Judd Burstein, was surprised that he would have repaired his family in this way for their own good. “To this day, it still amazes me that someone would do something like that, and it’s pure evil to me,” he explained.
As for his wife, Linda Lausten said: “I cried for a year, every day. She had a rash on her face where tears flowed from.” But she no longer. She Now she has remarried and she is actively involved in the search for John with the police.
Talking about John’s married life, he met Linda when they were kids growing up in New York. The two then got married in May of 1980 and brought two beautiful daughters into this world.
Sadly, John’s mother died in a nursing home after the riot. She never saw him again.
