John Wayne Gacy was born to parents John Stanley Gacy and mother Marion Gacy on March 17, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. It is said that his parents were married on January 7, 1939.
His upbringing held some clues as to why he became the person he was as an adult and became a notorious serial killer.
Growing up, John had a traumatic experience that left him with a scar that partly dictated his criminal behavior. His father, John Stanley Gacy, was registered as a physical and verbal abuser of him.

He was in such a state when he committed the murders. His father compared him to his sisters, calling him a “faggot”. When he was sexually abused by a family friend in 1949, he never told his father for fear that John Stanley would blame him.
dr. Richard claimed that by killing him he was reenacting horrifying experiences from his growing up. The doctor revealed: “His father actually abused him in the basement of his own home when he was a child. Gacy tried to reproduce this behavior with his victims. And so all those corpses that he put in the basement were as if his father had buried him.”
John was close to his mother Marion. In June 1970, after being paroled, he moved in with his mother. His mother helped him come up with an acronym for the construction business, PDM Contractors (Painting, Decorating and Maintenance), according to the new yorker.
However, the relationship between the two was not perfect. Marion once caught her son trying on her underwear and punished him for it. In her confessional tapes, she revealed: “She said she would make me go down the street with him if she ever caught me with him again.”

He then added: “The media painted him as an alcoholic monster. ALRIGHT, [sic] my dad drank, and he was Jekyll and Hyde when he drank. If he came from the basement and said the walls were pink, you said the walls were pink, but you learned to walk away from him and keep your mouth shut at the table.”
