Jonathan Butler Said That He Experienced Racial Profiling In Napa Valley

Jonathan Butler, a South African musician, said he was subjected to racism at an American restaurant in Napa Valley. On August 15, the 60-year-old actor shared his experience with the restaurant manager of St. Helena’s Goose and Gander. In the nearly five-minute video, Butler recounts how the restaurant manager followed him and his friends outside the restaurant to see if they would tip the waiter who served them the meal. The restaurant apologized to the musician and his friends, saying the event “should never have happened”.

Jonathan Butler described his bad experience at a restaurant in Napa Valley.

Butler described the incident on Instagram, saying that the manager of the restaurant Goose and Gander followed him and his team into their car after they had a “great dinner,” paid the bill and waiter, and left the restaurant. When the male singer asked the manager if there was a problem, the staff member asked if he was in charge of the server.

“I’ve never been tracked out of a restaurant before.” He was disrespectful to me and others who ate at the restaurant. I don’t believe he would do that to a white person, but he felt comfortable doing it with me to see if we would take care of the server. With that said, the lack of respect really worries me when in Napa Valley, of all the places where jazz restaurants attract visitors from all over the world, this person decided to come close to my car to see if I would take care of the waiter.

Butler added that he tipped the waitress generously and entered the restaurant to confront the manager, who told him he didn’t want to bother anyone. When the musician challenged him, the manager showed little sympathy, reminding him of his days in South Africa.

“I’m heartbroken. This needs to stop. Everyone should be treated with kindness and dignity. We must reject the idea that he has the right to follow me in the car just because of the color of my skin and the way I dress. The restaurant was highly recommended and I am furious that he (the host) is going to stone my friend who recommended this ‘great restaurant’.”

After Jonathan’s video was released, the restaurant issued a public apology, saying it would hire outside experts for “sensitivity training”.
