On Friday, November 25, 2022, Jonathan “Hovain” Hylton, one of hip-hop’s most beloved managers, passed away. His death was announced the next day in a post on his Instagram account, saying he died at home. He also asked his followers to respect his family’s privacy during this difficult time. Hovian is a label artist, owner and manager known for his hard work and kind demeanor. T-Pain, YFN Lucci, Cam’ron, Troy Ave and Styles P. Dom Kennedy are among the platinum-selling musicians he has collaborated with.
Hovian taught “The Music Business” at Kingsborough Community College.
Born in Brooklyn, Hovain’s early exposure to music prompted him to pursue a career in the field. He noted in a 2017 Scoop B Radio Podcast interview:
“I don’t know what it is, but I know it has to do with music.” You don’t go to college and say, ‘OK. ‘I want to work in the music industry.’ “I believe my life and upbringing have prepared me for that.”
Hovain, who was pragmatic in nature, first experienced business in the shadow of the late boxing promoter Butch Lewis. He says the event taught him the value of being “yourself”. He soon joined the Famous Company with Randall “Sicakamore” Medford. The group has overseen the careers of various artists, including Rich Hill, son of Tommy Hilfiger. They also helped found the live show Famous Factory, which featured musicians like Curren$yi and Wiz Khalifa, in collaboration with XXL Magazine.
He quickly founded his own company, Hovain Hylton Management, where he combined management and marketing to create a “unique branding arrangement”. Young Lito, a rapper from Brooklyn, and seasoned writer and artist Rob Markman are among his most recent clients. His amazing abilities have allowed him to form partnerships with sports companies such as Adidas, Avion Tequila and Diddy’s Sean John clothing line. When it comes to his work ethic, Hovian says it’s not about arranging a deal, but finding the right arrangement that benefits both the client and the brand. He declared:
“The benefits of doing great business go beyond just getting a check.” It’s about providing a good experience for my customers, the brand, and most importantly, the customer.”
He was named a “Top Music CEO” by Billboard just a week before his death. Additionally, the hip-hop executive was asked to teach a week-long course called “The Business of Music” at Kingsborough Community College last year. The training covers issues like publishing arrangements, how artists can profit from business deals, etc.
