Brooklyn software engineer Josh Wardle created a pun on his partner Palak Shah just for the two of them. As a play on words, he called it ‘Wordle’. The couple played for months and the game became a must-play on his family’s WhatsApp group after he introduced the game to his relatives.
In October 2021, after realizing that he might be onto something, Josh released the game to the world. In November 2021, 90 people played the game that was released to the public. Two months later, more than 300 thousand dollars was played in the game.
Let’s talk about the game. challenges players to guess a five letter word similar to the Mastermind color guessing game. The game then tells you if any of your letters were in the secret word and if they were in the correct place. The player has six attempts to get it right.
The best thing about the game is that there are no pop up ads or flashing banners.
Josh has also previously created two collaborative social experiments on the site, called The Button (2015) and Place (2017).
As background, Wordle’s prototype was created in 2013. He pitched the idea to his friends and it was rejected. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, he and Palak delved into the New York Times Spelling Bee and Daily Crossword Puzzle. So his creativity to create something fun manifested in ‘Wordle’.
The game limits one move per day for each player. Also, Wordle was not able to share the results until mid-December.
