Juan Merchan’s father served as a military officer in Colombia. His father also worked in the Colombian intelligence service. After moving to New York, the judge’s dad worked as a dishwasher at the old Americana Hotel in Manhattan.
Similarly, Juan Merchan’s mother worked various jobs in New York, including working in zipper and toy factories and packing food for airplane meals.
Juan Merchan has five brothers and sisters
The judge is the youngest of the six children of his parents. But he is the first to go to university.
