Who was Junko Furuta?
In the late 1980s, Junko Furuta, a Japanese high school student, was kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed. Because her body was found in a concrete drum, her murder case has been called the “high school girl’s murder in concrete case.” Hiroshi Miyano, J Ogura, Shinji Minato and Yasushi Watanabe, four teenagers, mainly carried out the abuse over a 40-day period from November 1988 to January 1989.

Furuta was born in the city of Misato in Saitama Prefecture. Her parents, older brother and younger brother lived with her. From October 1988, she worked part-time at a plastic mold factory during her non-class hours while attending Yashio-Minami High School. She did it to save money for a graduation vacation she was planning. Furuta also accepted a job offer at an electronics store, which she expected to start next graduation. Furuta was well-liked by her peers in high school, with good grades and few absences. She was a popular girl with attractive features who wanted to become an idol singer.
On April 2, 1989, Junko Furuta was laid to rest. Furuta’s future employer gave her parents the uniform she would have worn had she taken the position. The clothes were placed in her coffin. The principal of the school awarded Furuta with a high school diploma, which she presented to her parents at graduation. Since then, the area around Furuta’s body has been landscaped and is now known as Wakasu Park.

Hiroshi Miyano, 18, J Ogura, 17, Shinji Minato, 16, and Yasushi Watanabe, 17, were the perpetrators, identified in court documents as “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” respectively . They were using the second floor of Minato’s house as a place to go out at the time of the incident and had previously committed crimes such as purse theft, extortion and rape as a scamp. The identity of the young men was hidden by the court because they were all minors at the time of the crime. However, their identity was found and published by the journalists of Shūkan Bunshun magazine. They argued that the accused did not deserve the protection of the right to anonymity due to the gravity of the crime. Instead of murder, all four boys pleaded guilty to “causing bodily harm resulting in death”.

Who are Junko Furuta’s killers?
Hiroshi Miyano, who was eighteen years old at the time of the crime and later changed his identity to Hiroshi Yokoyama, was one of the young men who killed Junko Futura. Jo Ogura, who was eighteen years old at the time of the crime and is now known as Jo Kamisaku, was also eighteen years old at the time of the crime. Finally, at the time of the crime, Shinji Minato was sixteen (some sources refer to him as Nobuharu Minato) and Yasushi Watanabe was seventeen.
Since all the killers were teenagers, the court sentenced each of the rapists/perpetrators to inexplicably low sentences. For example, Hiroshi Miyano received a twenty-year sentence, Shinji Minato received a sentence of five to nine years, Jo Ogura received eight years in prison, and Yasushi Watanabe received a sentence of five to seven years.
