After a scandal-filled year in which the company came under fire for its handling of sexual assault complaints, Hockey Canada announced on Tuesday that Katherine Henderson had been hired as president and chief executive officer.

Henderson, who served as Curling Canada’s CEO for the last seven years, will take on her new position on September 4. Hugh L. Fraser, chair of the Hockey Canada board of directors, stated in a news release that Katherine “has the track record and experience to lead the ongoing transformation of Hockey Canada.”

“With her in charge, we are confident that we will continue to take the necessary steps to guarantee hockey is a safe and inclusive sport and that Hockey Canada benefits from best-in-class governance,” the statement reads. Henderson spearheaded pay equity for men’s and women’s curling teams at Curling Canada, successfully led campaigns to attract new Canadians to the sport, and oversaw a financial turnaround of the organization’s economic model.

Henderson’s previous position was senior vice-president of marketing and revenue for the organising committee of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, where she contributed to the Games’ attendance, ticket sales, and television ratings records. Henderson declared, “Hockey’s potential is endless.

“I am eager to work with our board and staff, our athletes, our members and local associations, our corporate and hockey partners, and our fans and participants to ensure that all Canadians have a personalised hockey experience that is right for them,” said the president of the organisation. Henderson takes over for Scott Smith, who left last October after the controversy forced the resignation of the whole board of the governing body.

When news of an alleged group sexual assault involving members of Canada’s 2018 world junior squad and an out-of-court settlement surfaced in May 2022, Hockey Canada came under pressure. The claims made against the players who have not been named have not been proven in court, but the Canadian federal government did stop financing the national governing body because of how it handled the alleged sexual assault.

The troubled institution has subsequently undertaken a complete governance review and declared it would no longer use a fund that was funded by player registration fees across the nation to settle sexual assault accusations. Following Hockey Canada’s fulfilment of the requisite requirements, the Canadian government resumed financing earlier this year.

Hockey Canada has to fully ratify Abuse-Free Sport, put the recommendations of an independent governance assessment into practise, and promise to provide the federal government with regular reports in order to get its money back.
