Katie Thurston and John Hersey from The Bachelorette have tried everything to mend their love, but after 7 months of dating, the two announced their split on June 20. Katie is now open about her turbulent relationship, saying she was “frightened” by ex-boyfriend John Hersey. Katie Thurston spoke about the split on Vine, the Bachelor Nation podcast hosted by Kaitlyn Bristowe, on Tuesday, August 23, and said:
“He turned me down. In fact, we actually broke up twice. The first time nobody knew about it… We discussed it and agreed to get back together a week or two later, so I believe we’re ready.”

Katie is now open about why her relationship with John ended two months ago. Katie noted on the show that it is difficult to have a relationship and went on to explain the main reason behind her breakup with John. She said John needed someone who shared his interests and “could learn to surf” with him. Katie was irritated with his suggestion. She speaks,
“I jumped out of a damn plane three times… to share his hobby.” Eight hours in elementary school, all for him to join his love, and that was completely forgotten, and now we’re focused on surfing.”
Katie even gave him a truck to show how important he was in her life, and how she tried to change for John but nothing could save their relationship. She dropped everything:
“I bought him a freaky touring car.” I give this person permission to quit. “Whatever you want me to be, I will be,” I said. In retrospect, that was neither healthy nor helpful. But it’s a bit disrespectful to say, “Damn, I gave you everything, and this didn’t work.”

Katie met John as a contestant on The Bachelorette during her season. He was dropped from the reality dating show in its second week, but the two made up after The Bachelor ended. Before dating, the two were friends. They announced their relationship in November, just a month after Katie broke off her engagement to season winner Blake Moynes in October 2021, three months after The Bachelorette finale aired.
Despite “a lot of public criticism of the situation”, Katie continued with John. They divorced after only a few months of dating. The Washington native admitted she “initially denied” after the split. She continued,
“It just surprised me and I put all my eggs in one basket with that guy and I don’t want to say I regret it because I believe every relationship is a lesson, but it was just a six-month break.”
Despite her divorce, the 31-year-old The Bachelorette star insists she’s in a good place today.
