Katurah Topps didn’t grow up watching survived, unlike most of the other contestants of the show. But when her grown-up eyes discovered it late (2020), she also learned that she might “damn” love this series. So she watched it non-stop for a few years, and one day after working really hard and hard at work, she found herself asking, “Why are you just watching this? Why didn’t you register?..”. Katurah Topps was inspired to give it a try Survived because she realized that work is taking up so much of her time that she hardly remembers the last time she had an adventure. This, she thought, was her chance to do something for herself and show what she was made of.
When asked by parade.com, “What is the one life experience that you feel has prepared you the most for the game?”, Katurah said that there is no one thing in particular. The whole experience of walking the planet as a queer black woman, she said, made her the most prepared Survived,
Katurah is introduced to observers as someone who competes as an original member of the Belo tribe. 17 others joined her on this trip. Together they were divided into three tribes: Belo, Lulu and Reba.
Once entered Survivors 45, Katurah expected to gravitate towards people so loyal that it becomes “unrelenting loyalty to the point where it’s illogical”. Basically, she planned to “charm the pants off everyone” by making them think she was just a “cute girl from a small town.”
Katurah, when asked to say with whom she identifies one winner and one non-winner from the show from previous seasons, said that she has one name for both, and that is Natalie.
So Katurah decided to go into this show inspired by people like Natalie and some carefully thought out plans, while also being prepared for the possibility that the reaction to her could be either extremely positive or extremely negative.

Katurah is a civil rights attorney. Since July 2018, she has served as Policy Advisor to the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Education Fund (LDF) and a key member of LDF’s Justice in Public Safety Project in New York, New York. Prior to that, she was a co-founder and Litigation Associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP for two years. Although civil rights work has always been her passion and focus, she didn’t always have a choice to jump into it right away because she also needed to pay her bills working at large law firms. But now, having paid off her debt, she is proud to work at one of the top civil rights law firms in the country.
