Like AirBnB for yachts, GetMyBoat lets you rent the boat of your dreams

get my boat app yacht charter getmyboatAfrica Studio/ShutterstockBoats are like kids — great to play with, fun to spend time with, but a hassle to monitor 24/7. But now, boat owners and boat enthusiasts alike can do what parents can’t – at least share the load a little. Thanks to GetMyBoat, the world’s largest boat rental marketplace, you can now either rent out your boat to individuals (or families) looking to get out on the water, or better yet, simply rent your boat out as a floating hotel. It’s basically a floating version of AirBnB.

GetMyBoat’s newest feature, called “Sleep Aboard,” allows guests to be lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the waves below. As described in the company’s latest press release, “Sleep Aboard is a ship-and-breakfast-type experience where passengers can stay aboard the owner’s ship without leaving the dock.” Although most owners do not allow their renters to take these babies out for a ride, some do organize excursions for an additional fee. This certainly takes a lot of the stress out of renting a boat — while there’s always the risk of damage when you’re out and about, the potential for disaster seems to be greatly reduced when the boat never leaves the marina. It is, as GetMyBoat says, a “controlled environment.”

Sleep Aboard is already a global venture, with sleep-aboard options available across the United States and Europe. The Sleep Aboard feature has already attracted an influx of 1,000 new boats to the GetMyBoat marketplace, as boat owners now see this relatively low-risk situation as an easy source of secondary income. In a statement, Bryan Petro, CIO at GetMyBoat, noted, “There are boating bed and breakfasts in Newport, Miami and San Francisco; boats on lakes where people want to stop and enjoy the fresh air. In Amsterdam houseboats are popular, while in the UK canal boats are common.”

Today, the entire GetMyBoat fleet boasts around 35,000 vessels in 143 countries and makes the once exclusive activity more accessible to the masses. As Petro stated, “…there is [boat] for everyone’s budget”, and these floating accommodations are now considered an alternative to traditional housing options. According to their press release, “GetMyBoat aims to provide additional accommodation during events such as the World Cup or Olympics, or even concerts and festivals that take over cities and result in overbooked hotel rooms at outrageous prices.” Of course, prices vary quite drastically — while most Sleep Aboard participants seem to charge around $200, some are asking upwards of $4,000 a day.

Petro concluded: “At GetMyBoat, we are committed to the growth of boating worldwide. Sleep Aboard is another way to reach new boaters and ensure the growth of an activity that everyone should have the opportunity to experience. We are happy to introduce this feature and excited to see its impact on how the world sails.”

So while you can’t rent out your baby for the night, you can certainly rent out your boat, and from the looks of it, you can score yourself a pretty sweet deal in the process.
