Alicia’s choice to take on a demanding job is to take care of her children and deal with her husband who is incarcerated. Yet the two women find themselves in similar situations, trying to rise above what their partners have done.

If you’re looking for more from Russell, check it out Americans, a period spy drama that aired for six seasons on FX. She plays Elizabeth, a Soviet KGB intelligence officer posing as a suburban wife and mother alongside fellow agent Philip (Matthew Rhys) posing as her husband. While deep undercover, the pair manage the conflict between the FBI’s Washington office and the KGB Rezidentura, providing a unique perspective from both sides.
The action is set during the Cold War, Americans covers the time period after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration and ends before the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, signed by the US and the Soviet Union in 1987. The series has been widely praised as one of the best of the 2010s, praised for its writing, characters and acting, including Russell’s nuanced performance of a committed supporter of communism.

Netflix’s latest hit, Night agent, is currently one of the most popular shows on Netflix. Some believe that Diplomat could attract numbers comparable to political thriller series. Indeed, the two shows share similarities. Both cover the intricate relationship between politicians and the FBI. IN Night agent, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) is a young agent tasked with the mundane job of sitting in a windowless room and operating a single phone dedicated to secret night agents. If they are ever in trouble, they call this number. It never rings, but when it finally does, Peter, who works part-FBI and part-White House, becomes embroiled in a complicated plot involving murder, assassins, a train bombing and a potential mole in the White House.
Night agent is more surface action and excitement while Diplomat it encourages a very intelligent and nuanced political dialogue. But fans of the latter will appreciate the escape from reality and twists Night agent with a similar political orientation. It’s much faster paced, but the series draws you in with each of the 10 episodes.

Designated Survivors (2016-2019)

IN Diplomat, Kate is brought to a new, high position, struggling with drastic changes in her life and work. Moreover, it was also revealed that she was shortlisted to take over as vice president due to the pending scandal. Something similar happens to Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) in Designated as a survivor. He is the low-ranking US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who was chosen as a survivor during the State of the Nation Address. This position is designed to ensure that someone from the current administration remains in a safe, underground location in the event of a disaster. Of course, no one ever suspects that something will go wrong. But there is. A bomb explodes and kills everyone in the administration, except Tom. Suddenly, an often overlooked politician becomes America’s new president.
Like Kate, Tom struggles with impostor syndrome at first, wondering if he really is qualified. But he also recognizes a huge opportunity to finally make important changes. Like Kate, Tom really cares about people and doing work that will help, not suit a political agenda. There is also the mystery surrounding what and who caused the attack in the first place. Designated as a survivor aired on ABC for two seasons and was picked up by Netflix for a third after its cancellation.

Madam Secretary (2014-2019)

Another female series starring Tea Leoni madam secretary as Elizabeth “Bess” Adams McCord, the Secretary of State who also previously worked as a CIA analyst. Like Kate, she is tasked with working on international diplomacy. Likewise, she has a complicated relationship with her equally intelligent and talented ex-Marine husband Henry (Tim Daly). When Bess is finally named President of the United States, he becomes First Gentleman, in a position similar to Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) who now has to sit on the sidelines.
madam secretary it’s about navigating the complicated world of politics and dealing with international threats, and it’s perfect to watch Diplomat. Originally airing on CBS, the series managed to survive for six seasons before finally ending in 2019.

Almost universally praised, Country is a spy thriller with a female protagonist who, like Kate, has a deep understanding of dealing with war-torn countries and diplomatic relations. However, Carrie (Claire Danes) is a CIA officer. On the other hand, her personal struggles don’t involve her husband, but rather her bipolar disorder.
Throughout the series, Carrie navigates the complicated relationships between the US and other countries. Her main role is to help prevent terrorist attacks, and her unique intuition and understanding of others given her time spent in areas like Kabul (much like Kate) make her uniquely qualified for the job. But just like Kate, Carrie sometimes gets in her own way. Debora Cahn, creator Diplomaton which he previously worked Countryso it’s no surprise that the two shows are likely to appeal to the same audience.
