Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is far better than it has any right to be. The film, which stars Chris Pine, Hugh Grant and Michelle Rodriguez, is Hollywood’s latest attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game. Previous industry attempts to do this have gone famously poorly. Fortunately, Honor Among Thieves is not only a significant improvement over previous Dungeons & Dragons films, it’s also a genuinely fun adventure film that has more heart than most other blockbusters being released today.
Part of the film’s charm is its light, straightforward comedic tone. From the moment it starts, Honor Among Thieves doesn’t take itself too seriously. While it has more than its fair share of exposition and world-building, the film never gets too bogged down in establishing the “seriousness” of its fantasy world. Instead, Honor Among Thieves focuses all its efforts on telling a fantastic adventure story that is, above all, addictively fun.
