But some countries combine North America and South America into a single continent. This combined land mass is often referred to as America.
Spanning a distance of 8,700 miles from north to south, the Americas roughly touch both the Arctic and Antarctic rings. With a population of over 1.014 billion, the United States covers an area larger than 16.43 million square miles.
Comprised of 35 countries, including some of the largest in the world, as well as several dependent territories, the United States is an important geographical and geopolitical entity.

Traditionally, the Americas can be divided into four main geographical regions or sub-regions:

North America
North America, commonly referred to as North America, represents the land north of the wider Americas. As the third largest continent on Earth, it has a substantial area of 9.5 million square miles (24.7 million km2) and occupies a place within the planet’s western hemisphere. According to the geographical map established by the United Nations, North America can be divided into three distinct regions: North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The term “North America” specifically refers to the northern part of the continent. This area includes important territories such as the largest island in the world, Greenland, as well as the independent states of Canada, the United States and Mexico. In terms of population, North America is home to about 498 million people, as of 2019.

South America
South America is the southern continent of America and occupies an important place in the Western Hemisphere. As the fourth largest continent in the world, it lies mainly south of the equator. The Caribbean, also known as the West Indies, refers to a group of islands and archipelagos located in the Caribbean Sea, located in the southeastern United States and northern South America. Geographically, the Caribbean is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico to the west, the Florida Strait to the north, and the North Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Notable islands in the Caribbean include Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad. As of 2019, an estimated 44 million people call the Caribbean home.
