News about Louis Cunningham

Marie Antoinette is experiencing a resurgence in popularity that shows no signs of slowing. The second season of the Canal+ drama “Marie Antoinette,” which premiered on PBS last week, has been greenlit. Louis Cunningham and Emilia Schüle will reprise their roles as King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. According to Variety, the second season will explore how the royal couple dealt with the economic disaster that occurred during their reign, as well as the repeated attacks by Provence and Chartres against the couple which incited animosity among the nobility and resulted in disastrous consequences.

Deborah Davis, the series creator, will return as executive producer for season two. Ed Bazalgette will direct the first four episodes of the new season, with filming expected to begin in September. Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, which distributes the series internationally, said in a statement: “The series is a high-quality production with captivating talents and lavish locations. I am excited to bring this landmark new season of this unique interpretation of French fashion queen to a global audience.”

The show portrays France’s queen from a feminist perspective. Actress Emilia Schüle stated that “She was completely different from what history has made her out to be. She was not an uncaring monarch who disregarded her people; she was misunderstood and had her own view on gender identity.” She went on to explain that “In my opinion, she represents some of our most cherished values today such as equality, originality, and self-determination.”
