MakeMyTrip’s tone-deaf ad for Pakistani fans receives flak from people

MakeMyTrip’s ad targeting Pakistani fans who have come to India to support their team in the ongoing 2023 ICC World Cup is drawing criticism online. The travel company released an ad ahead of the India-Pakistan match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Netizens criticized the ad and labeled it ‘horrible’.

Several X users took to the microblogging platform to share images of the ad. Just like this individual who tweeted the photo and wrote: “What a horrible ad. We are not a sports nation! Sparring nation.”

Why did the ad make people angry?

“OPEN CALL TO PAKISTANI FANS,” reads the first line of the ad. Then, after a brief introduction, it continues: “If Pakistan lose by: 10 wickets or 200 runs, you will get a 50% discount. Use code: BoysPlayedWell. 6 wickets or 100 runs, get 30% off. Use Code: EkShaheenHaar. 3 wickets or 50 runs, get 10% off. Use code: NoMaukaMauka.”

The post was shared a few hours ago. Since then, it has collected close to 5,700 views. Several people took to the comments section to call out the travel company for creating the ad.

“Terrible,” user X posted. “We are the hosts, and we are mocking the guests we have invited,” commented another. “I agree. When I saw this ad, I thought it was so horrible,” said a third. “Goodbye MakeMyTrip. This is NOT cricket,” shared a fourth. “Disgusting,” wrote a fifth.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag shared his thoughts on the ad. Here’s what he tweeted:
