An estimated 20,000 or more people gathered to see the national anthem and the raising of the Malayan flag. The first Prime Minister of Malaysia shouted “Merdeka” a total of seven times. The term “Merdeka” means “free” in Malay. Since that day is of the greatest importance, August 31 is celebrated as a national holiday in the country. However, Merdeka is observed throughout the month. Malaysia Day falls on September 16.
Digging through history
The first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman assembled a delegation of Malaya consisting of political leaders and ministers in 1956 to negotiate with the British rulers for the country’s independence.
On February 8, 1956, an agreement was finalized for the country to gain independence from British rule. However, due to several administrative and logistical reasons, the actual independence of Malaysia was declared on 31 August 1957.
