Man finds maths puzzle while hiking, asks Reddit ‘Is it solvable’

One can come across all kinds of things while hiking, but it is unlikely that a hiker will find a note on a math puzzle. Yet that’s what happened to this man who found a puzzle on a hiking trail. He later took to Reddit to share the puzzle with others. Expressing his skepticism, he also asked fellow Redditors whether the problem was solvable or not.

“Is this solvable? I found this on a hiking trail. Above it was the message ‘World Champion:___’,” a Reddit user wrote. According to reports, he has been identified as Janiv. In the next few lines, he shared his thoughts on the math puzzle.

“I assume that the skis in the second equation must be divisible by two, so 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10, which would mean that the final equation would have to be 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010 or 2007. If we were to assume that they are looking for a world champion in soccer, then 2010 is the only year out of all the options when there was a FIFA Cup, so the answer would be Spain. It is a big assumption that they are looking for a football World Cup,” he shared. “Am I missing something or missing a piece of the puzzle?” he added further.

What did Reddit users say about this math puzzle?

“Skis would be 5 per ski and a hockey stick would be 2. Seems like the answer should be 2007,” a Reddit user suggested. “I think it’s 2b. Two pairs of skis, not 4 individual skis, still unsolvable,” posted another. Several others also expressed that they found the math puzzle “unsolvable.”

“How can you possibly get two identical symbols next to each other with the plus symbol as the squared number. That doesn’t make sense,” said the third. “In 2007 is certainly one of the possible solutions, but the second equation has more values. You could easily express it in different numbers (instead of 5 and 2): (3+3) + (3+3) + 10 = 22 There are multiple solutions,” wrote a fourth.
