Masked Singer’s Debbie Gibson Reveals Her Initial Guess For Medusa

The Masked Singer season 9’s Night Owl was revealed to be pop superstar Debbie Gibson, and she now reveals her guesses for Medusa, who made it through to the next round of the celebrity mystery singing competition. Debbie competed on ABBA Night, singing “Fernando,” while Medusa performed “Dancing Queen.” At the end of the night, Debbie and Medusa went head-to-head, singing “The Winner Takes It All,” in the Battle Royale. Although the panelists debated using the “Ding Dong Keep It On” Bell, Debbie was eliminated, and Medusa moved on to the third round of the competition.

In an interview with EW, The Masked Singer season 9 contestant Debbie revealed her guess for Medusa. One of her initial guesses was Janelle Monáe, because of “something about her elegance and the avant garde nature of her voice.” However, Debbie confessed that she is now completely stumped. When she heard her singing “Dancing Queen,” she had a lot of guesses in the R&B genre, with older soul singers coming to mind. But when Debbie saw Medusa perform in episode 1, “she had that super modern Kate McRae-like enunciation in the verses. So…now I think I might be wrong on the generation, and I might be wrong on the genre of artist that she is.” Debbie said that whoever The Masked Singer’s Medusa is, “is very crafty, because I think she’s purposely throwing us and sending everybody in different directions, only in the course of two performances.”

Debbie Gibson’s Time On The Masked Singer Was Meaningful

Debbie revealed that she was a last-minute replacement on The Masked Singer, and she got the call on the one-year anniversary of her mom’s passing. Since her mom managed her for 25 years, she thought, “Oh, my mom is managing me today and sending me a cute, fun little gig.” Because she joined The Masked Singer at the last minute, Debbie did not have much time to prepare for the show. She knew that there was a chance that she was not going to do more than a day. She shared that when she saw Medusa, she thought, “‘Oh, she’s been preparing for a long time.’ And I loved her for that, whoever she is. But she was so gracious. And it felt like she was rooting for me as well. So it was a very, very fun girl power camaraderie and energy as well.”

Debbie was another iconic performer to be unmasked so far on The Masked Singer season 9. She joins Howie Mandel, country music superstar Sara Evans (Mustang), and legendary actor Dick Van Dyke (Gnome) as the contestants who have been revealed so far. Jenny McCarthy was the only panelist who guessed her. The others thought she might be Kylie Minogue (Robin Thicke), Sarah Jessica Parker (Ken Jeong), or Belinda Carlisle (Nicole Scherzinger). Debbie wowed the crowd on ABBA Night with her fantastic rendition of “Fernando.”

The Masked Singer season 9’s Medusa has blown the panel and the audience away with her stunning performances. She won the premiere episode with her rendition of “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish and her Battle Royale performance of “Diamonds” by Rihanna against Sara. Her voice and the clues seem to be pointing in the direction of Medusa being either singers Bishop Briggs or Fergie. However, fans will have to continue to tune in to The Masked Singer to see if they, or Debbie, are correct about their guesses for Medusa.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
