Matt Blankinship on Survivor 44
So far, only one episode of Survivor 44 has aired and it feels like we’ve seen it all. The heartbreaking moment of the show definitely has to be Bruce Perreault’s departure from the show.
In the first challenge, Bruce got hurt in the first 20 minutes of the episode. During the military crawl under a wooden platform erected on the beach, Bruce hit his head and suffered profuse bleeding. Despite a gruesome head injury, Bruce continued with the challenge.
However, at one point Bruce lost consciousness and Jeff Probst, the series’ producer, stopped the competition. Some time later, Bruce regained consciousness and remained on the show only to be evacuated later.
After the challenge, while Bruce was helping his tribe set up camp, he felt a strange pain in his head. “My head is killing me,” Bruce said. He called in doctors to evaluate the star. After reviewing, Jeff decided that Bruce should leave the show.
Everyone was devastated to see Bruce leave the show, including Jeff. However, the episode ended well when Jeff announced that they would invite Bruce back to the show and that he would get another chance on the island.
Now speaking of Matt, his Soka tribe won both challenges at the Survivor 44 premiere. Before coming to play the survival competition, Matt spoke to Parade.com and answered some important questions.
In response to the question, “What is one life experience that you feel has prepared you for the game?” Matt said, “I think one of the things I’ve had to learn the hard way in life is that you don’t always practicing things the first time… At my current job, I applied three times and was turned down every time. And then the fourth time, I finally got the job. So I think persistence and the ability to take this moment of defeat and get up, turn around and try again to be very important in this game.

The Survivor 44 contestant completed his undergraduate studies at Oberlin with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. While Matt was at Oberlin, he interned for SFJAZZ. There, he helped organize and expand the SFJAZZ scanned sheet music database and assisted in audition administration.
After graduation, he worked as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon Lab123 from July 2017 to November 2018.
