Matt Gould is a writer and composer who has been active in helping orphans in Uganda to go to school. And as they say, “good things happen to good people,” he met her husband, She-Hulk star Griffin Matthews, on his journey to help others.

Meet Matt Gould, husband of Griffin Matthews
Matt Gould served as a peacekeeper in West Africa. But when he returned to the United States, Matt simply couldn’t forget what happened there and was depressed by “the state of things in the world.” So, wanting to help the people of Uganda; especially the children, he began to look around him until one of his friends told him about “this guy who was helping African children”, who turned out to be Griffin Matthews.
“The first time I saw him, he had dreadlocks down to his butt, and I thought he was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen,” Matt recalled.
After that, Matt and Griffin began their journey of service helping the children of Uganda in 2008, and since the She-Hulk star had followed Matt for years, she knew Griffin was a keeper.
However, as the two came from different backgrounds, Griffin, an African-American Christian, and Matt, a Jewish-American white man, struggled with the difference between their roots. And it was only after their trip to Germany that the enlightenment hit them: “blacks, Jews, homosexuals, they would all have been killed in that land 70 years ago.”
Fast forward to January 21, 2017, the lovebirds tied the knot in an intimate ceremony. “It was the happiest day of my life. Except the next day and the next day and the next day…” Matt recalled of his wedding.
She also shared that the reason she married Griffin was to show “Griffin and the world how much (he) can love.” But that wasn’t all, she added, she married the She-Hulk actor because Griffin got to see the parts she never wanted to show: “the parts that are ugly; that feed my insecurity and pain. Parts that I grew up believing weren’t worth coming to light. The parts that, when left unchecked, make me the worst of me,” she explained.
Did you know: Uganda’s anti-gay law was only passed in October 2007. And since it was fairly new, Matt and Griffin, who were steeped in the culture, tried to respect physical boundaries and never slept in the same bed.

Matt Gould has two sons named Galileo and Apollo.
Their son, Apollo, was born on July 27, 2020, and Matt and Griffin adopted him just 5 days later.

Speaking of parenting, Matt said that just because Galileo and Apollo “weren’t your children, doesn’t mean they weren’t loved.” He also revealed that his children had been raised in foster care since birth. Then they were not allowed to show the faces of Matt and Griffin on social networks.
But Matt isn’t just a father of two. In Uganda, Matt and Griffin were called “tatas”, which means dads. This is how a lot of people put on their dad hats.

Matt Gould is an author and composer dedicated to helping Ugandan orphans get an education. He started his journey in 2005 trying to help some children at a local orphanage. But he soon started his own non-profit organization to support 10 orphans who couldn’t afford school.
In 2008, after meeting Griffin, the two organized their first benefit concert, a “musical ad,” as Gould described it, to raise money. And in the end they created the musical Witness Uganda, also known as Invisible Thread, based on the struggles of Griffin’s organization UgandaProject, which he founded in 2005.
His music documentary even won a Richard Rodgers Award, as well as ASCAP’s Harold Adamson Lyric Award and the 2021 Michelle and Dean Kay Award.
Now Matt has been visiting Uganda, supporting Ugandan students and sharing stories about the complexities of helping for over 10 years.
Before turning to helping and writing, Matt was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania from 2001 to 2003. As for Griffin, he only visited Uganda in 2005 as a humanitarian trip.
Regarding his education, Matt graduated from Boston University College of Fine Arts.
In addition to Witness Uganda’s “Invisible Thread”, Matt also worked on tracks such as Amancay, Sweat: Movement IV and the Romantica Passione Suite (multiple tracks).
