Matty Edgell on GBBO The Greatest Bake Off 2023
Apparently, Matty Edgell’s students were “picking the dickens” for it, says the teacher who competes in the The Great British Bake Off. One of the twelve bakers competing in the latest season of the Channel 4 show is Peterborough resident Matty. The PE and science teacher claimed it was a “huge shock” when people found out he would be taking part in the show.
“I think I’m going to keep my fingers crossed,” Matty told the BBC.
He claimed his students, family and friends were stunned, although they were “really supportive” of him going on the show. He described it as “the most bizarre, surreal experience from start to finish”. “When you first walk in there, it’s weird because it’s like you’re on TV,” he added.
Matty stated that he will be watching the pre-recorded series with his parents, his fiancee’s parents and her parents. It would be “the most uncomfortable hour I’ve ever experienced,” Matty said.
Matty calls himself a “former secret baker” with a “rustic but neat” aesthetic who enjoys looking at online pastry tutorials before bed. Favorite flavors include citrus, nuts and chocolate. The cake with teddy bears that his grandmother made for his fourth birthday, he added to the program, was the first baking that caught his attention. Since then, all his baked goods have tried to match his brilliance.
Matty said Peterborough today, “I never thought I’d be on Bake Off. My reaction was “Oh **********” and then my feet went numb. It was so surreal, but both Alison and Noel are so sweet and did such a good job of making us feel relaxed and included. The first time I walked in and saw my station it was really surreal and soon it became really scary when I realized I was at the very beginning. I was so naive about everything that goes into making Bake Off.”
“I think my strengths are flavors and my weaknesses are my decorating skills,” he said of his strengths and weaknesses.
