“I feel like I’m the one,” he said, after an NFL benefit, about overcoming adversity as a Detroit kid and a Cincinnati player. “I feel like I’m the best in the draft. There is no doubt about it. There’s no way I’m going to be a failure. That shouldn’t even be an option.”
He played cornerback and passed the basic track and field requirements.

Alisa Gardner was born in December 1974, making her 47 years old. When Ahmad was little, he asked his mother at the beginning of the year to buy him a Playstation a few months later for Christmas. He winced, knowing how tight money was. “But come Christmas time, you’d see it right there in that big old box,” Gardner said. “She always made the impossible possible.”
Alisa worked multiple jobs on the assembly lines of a car factory, hard work that had recently hurt her shoulder.
It was Alisa who first witnessed her son’s skill in the field. He remembers how tightly she clung to his career aspirations. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, “his answer to him has never changed,” Alisa said in an interview. He wanted to be a footballer.
The Cincinnati coaches made their interest evident every step of the way, even visiting Gardner’s mom at work.
In December 2020, Ahmad’s mother shared how sentimental she had been feeling lately. All three of her children are grown and she said she “cried a lot this year.” During Ahmad’s childhood, he sometimes worked at night, from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am, assembling at a car seat factory. As a single mother, she managed to get her children to school despite getting little sleep. Allante, Ahmad’s older brother called her “Superwoman”.
As the family prepared to travel to Texas for the game, she became upset at the thought of her son’s route to this point. As a child she saw that she had talent and now she is one of the best players in the country, with a promising future in the NFL and the opportunity to compete for a national championship.
Alisa recognized the impossibility of all that. But she also remembered her self-assured son and her dream that constantly manifested itself before her eyes.
“He knew,” she said, “exactly what he wanted.”
In August 2016, Ahmad posted on his Twitter: “I will continue working until my mother is gone.”
Alisa knows her son is known to the world as “Willow” and even showed up to the 2022 NFL Draft wearing diamond chains. But Alisa calls her youngest son by her name. She said that he is the calmest of her three children.
Allante also added that his brother is “more of a silent killer.”
