Chef Richard Blais comes from a family of four: parents and sister. The eldest of two children, Richard was born in February 1972. Richard Blais has had a significant impact on the hospitality industry over the past 15 years and is best known for being the winner of Bravo’s Top Chef All-Stars. Like many ambitious young chefs, he began his career working as a McDonald’s “Poissonnier.”
Here he first experimented with deconstruction in the kitchen, serving Filet-O-Fish sandwiches without the bun on top. Richard attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York as a result of his growing interest in kitchens and the service industry. A motivated student, he spent his spare time between semesters studying with legendary chef Thomas Keller at the French Laundry in Yountville, California, where he also met rising culinary stars Grant Achatz and Eric Ziebold.
Richard moved to New York in 1998 after graduating from the CIA to work at chef Daniel Boulud’s famed restaurant Daniel. Then, according to his professional compass, he traveled to Roses in Spain, where he completed a brief stint at El Bulli with renowned chef Ferran Adri.
Richard moved to Atlanta in 2000 to manage a regional seafood concept. His highly inventive approach to cooking and eating led to the founding of Trail Blais, a leading culinary firm that has mentored, created and managed some of Atlanta’s most iconic restaurants, including numerous Flip Burger Boutique and HD-1 locations.
Since then he has been a part of many television shows. Richard has also appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Live! with Kelly and Michael and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, as well as in numerous publications including The New York Times, InStyle, and Food & Wine magazine.

Chef Richard Blais is the son of Kenneth “Kenny” Blais. He was born in July 1953 to Louis J. and Martha E. (Crow) Blais. He has a brother named James C. Blais from Hempstead, New York. Unfortunately, his sister died on September 3, 2013 at the age of 56. He received his BA in English, Summa Cum Laude, from Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.
James, Kenny’s brother, works as the head of appraisals at Telephonics.
As for Kenny, he was the technical director of ONE World Sports in 2013. He has also worked as a freelance video director and editor. In addition, he has also worked at MTV in the role of Associate Network Director. In addition, he has also worked at Production by Design and Encompass Digital Media as a master control operator.
Sadly, Kenny passed away in early December 2020. After his father’s death, Richard posted on his IG, “My dad passed away a few days ago. You know how he goes, you find old photos and you remember. I know you would love this photo because it shows his Keith Hernandez phase in the early 80’s. I know you would love this photo because he loved coaching my minor leaguers. So much so that it was the last message he sent me. I love it because I don’t remember ever holding my dad’s hand, but I wish I could again. REST IN PEACE DAD.”
