One of Nintendo’s lesser-known but still beloved franchises is Metroid — a series that originally started on the NES, putting us in the shoes of bounty hunter Samus Aran. Now, more than 35 years later, fans eagerly await the next entry in the series, Metroid Prime 4, which has been worked on for several years.
The Prime series takes the formula presented in the 2D games and turns it into a 3D first-person adventure that still strongly resembles Metroid, despite the change in perspective.
Hyper for the next installment in the series has found a new life now after the original Metroid Prime is available to play on the Nintendo Switch (and there are rumors that released sequels are also the way to go).
Although we don’t know much about it Metroid Prime 4, there are little bits of information here and there on the internet. We’ve searched as much as we could find to bring you everything we know about Metroid Prime 4.

Metroid Prime 4 – First Look – Nintendo E3 2017
Originally revealed during E3 2017. Metroid Prime 4 it is presented in the smallest possible capacity. Since it was still very early in development at the time, Nintendo only had a logo ready, revealing that the game was in development and little else by way of an announcement trailer. The trailer had fancy space-themed “beep boops,” but other than that, only the title was shown.
While this was a great announcement, it was hard to get too excited about a game we know nothing about. Regardless, you can watch its initial E3 2017 announcement trailer above.

Development update for Metroid Prime 4 for Nintendo Switch
Metroid Prime 4 has had a rocky history since its original announcement in 2017. At the time, there were rumors that Bandai Namco was working on the game, with Nintendo overseeing its development. It’s never been confirmed which developer was initially working on it, only that Retro Studios — the team behind the other Prime games — won’t be involved for some reason (presumably due to other projects).
After the announcement, the game went silent for a while. Fast forward to January 2019, and Nintendo has announced that development Metroid Prime 4 it was restarted due to the lack of quality of what had been created up to that point. “Since the announcement [of Metroid Prime 4]We haven’t been able to give you an update, but as a result of continued development since that time, although it’s very unfortunate — we have to let you know that the current development progress has not reached the standards we’re looking for in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series,” Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi said during the video updates (which you can view above).
“Nintendo always strives for the highest quality in our games; and in the development phase, we set challenges for ourselves and face every day whether the game is up to that quality,” continued Takahashi. “If we’re not happy with the quality, we can’t confidently deliver it to our customers, and the game won’t meet our fans’ expectations.”
Nintendo has finally announced that Retro Studios will be handling the development Metroid Prime 4, headed by longtime series producer Kensuke Tanabe. In the video, Takahashi said, “It will be a long way until the next time we can update you on development progress,” and we haven’t heard anything more about the game from Nintendo since then.
As of December 2020, Retro Studios was still in the hiring phase for the project. In fact, it was looking for a head/designer of artificial intelligence, which proved that development was still early at the time. Even in July 2022, Retro Studios is still looking to fill a number of vacancies, including an environment designer, a gameplay engineer, and a lead concept artist.
All this is to say Metroid Prime 4 it won’t be over soon. Even if Retro goes live right away in January 2019, that puts it just three years deep into development, and considering production hurdles and the fact that the team is still hiring for major roles, you shouldn’t expect to be playing until 2023 . earliest. A more realistic estimate puts its release sometime in 2024, given the high expectations of fans and Nintendo’s focus on quality. Ultimately, this is a good thing, but the wait will no doubt be excruciating.
In February 2022, Retro Studios updated their Twitter page with a new image showing Samus, the first new information about the game since the 2019 reboot video that announced the project.

Of course, not much, but at the moment, any news about Metroid Prime 4 worth discussing. Retro Studios and Nintendo no doubt knew the community would notice this subtle update, so perhaps this is an indication of a development milestone, meaning it will be ready for release soon.
One thing to consider is that it is a remaster of the first Metroid Prime the game is reportedly in the works according to GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb (via GameSpot). Grubb says he’s been told “pretty definitively” that all three games in the trilogy will be remastered, but that Nintendo will release them individually to make the upgrade Main 4. If true, that could mean Main 4 is further than we hoped.

As far as we know, Metroid Prime 4 is still running for the Nintendo Switch, though it wouldn’t be a surprise if it turned into a cross-platform release as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for GameCube and Wii or Breath of the wild for Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Considering Main 4 won’t be out for a while, it makes sense that Nintendo could decide to release it on any device that comes out after the Switch.
All we can say is that Main 4 it will be exclusive to the Nintendo platform when it comes out. Unfortunately, PlayStation and Xbox players.
More players

The Metroid Prime series is no stranger to multiplayer. Be that as it may Main numbers 2 local couch game or even critically loaded online multiplayer Federation force for the 3DS, it’s a series that lends itself to playing with others – for better or for worse. Although there is no confirmation if it is Main 4 will feature multiplayer, some fans have been vocal about wanting some sort of online co-op game. It could feature both co-op and competitive mode to round out the package, reminiscent of previous entries in the series. However, at the moment, the main focus seems to be on the very core of the game, as it is arguably the most important aspect. It is not clear if they will Main 4 will allow you to play with others, but it’s certain that it will feature some sort of multiplayer mode, be it offline or online via the Internet.

Despite the great development difficulties of the game, Metroid Prime 4 in fact, it’s currently available for pre-order through Amazon. However, we wouldn’t get too worked up about this one as it’s been available for pre-order for a while now with no sign of it going on sale anytime soon. Still, it can be mildly satisfying to put money on it, even if it won’t speed up the wait.
