The 93-year-old former president of the GAA. Dr. Loftus is a native of Crossmolina, County Mayo, and played for the Mayo senior team that won the 1951 All-Ireland final.

From 1949 to 1953, during his time with the county, he won four championships. Dr Loftus continued to referee matches at club and inter-district level after retiring, refereeing all-Ireland finals in 1965 and 1968.

The chartered physician also operates a medical facility in the northern Mayo region, and has served for a time as a regional coroner. His daughter-in-law’s current coronation officer in the Mayo region is Dr. Eleanor Fitzgerald.

Following his arbitration career, Dr. Loftus was appointed Chairman of the Connacht GAA Board. He later served as chairman of the committee to celebrate the Association’s 100th anniversary in 1984. Dr. Loftus was a vocal protester against alcohol abuse throughout his career.

Michael Martin, Tánaiste, was one of many to pay tribute to Dr. Loftus by sharing a message on social media. The announcement said it was deeply saddened by the death of former GAA President Dr Michael Loftus, a man of high integrity who made a significant contribution to Irish sport and society.

I send my deepest condolences to all his family and friends. Thomas Byrne, the sports minister, also paid tribute to the former GAA chairman on social media.
