Before taking on the role of assistant men’s basketball coach for the Missouri Tigers, Porter had a successful basketball career. Michael’s basketball career turned to music.
Most notably, Porter has played basketball for Athletes in Action, a Cincinnati-based Christian sports league featuring former college athletes. AIA sends athletes to coach high school students in downtown Cincinnati. In 1991, Michael started Bible study groups and coached a basketball tournament. Many students became his close friends.
Because the words were difficult for students to understand, he started rapping, which was what most students loved at the time, to teach them about the Bible and life lessons. Porter started rapping as his new teaching strategy despite having no musical training. Students begin to understand him and his important lessons. He sees turning to rapping as a career, but he’s stuck with basketball.
Porter gained most of his basketball knowledge while serving as Upward Basketball’s head coach from 2003 to 2006. In addition to his basketball skills, Michael has helped athletes develop qualities that build confidence and character. Porter spent five seasons as a professional for AIA, competing around the world.
After serving as assistant coach for the first two years of Porter’s tenure at Mizzou, Porter was appointed director of player development ahead of the 2019-20 season. The Missouri Tigers’ three-year, $1,125 million contract expired on the last day of April this year and has not been renewed.
