Microsoft’s Flowspace Pod is the modern cubicle for the hybrid office

Microsoft’s Flowspace Pod concept will definitely make you jealous with its modern, minimalist and new design. It is a modern cabin designed for the hybrid working future.

Instead of boxy sides, the FlowSpace Pod comes with open sides for easy collaboration, an immersive design that lets you focus on your work, and a sleek construction that’s built with the realities of hybrid work in mind. Microsoft’s new take on the cabin even earned the company a Red Dot award for design, and the concept earned itself the accolade of “best of the best in 2021.”

The Flowspace Pod’s open chamber is seen configured with ambient backlighting, a minimalist desk setup, a large TV-like display that can be tilted and angled for ergonomic use — similar to Microsoft’s now-discontinued Surface Studio all-in-one — a simple chair and an optional rear partition for increased privacy. Instead of the solid side panels typical of most bulkheads today, smaller flaps—with built-in speakers—extend from the top and sides to give the pod its own sense of space without creating a confined environment.

“The Flowspace Pod is a vision for a new normal, a haven for focus and deep work in highly collaborative hybrid workplaces where alone time will become more precious,” Microsoft said of its concept on the Red Dot Awards page. The project was designed by the Microsoft Office Envisioning Team.

The idea behind Flowspace is no different from the on-demand remote workspaces created by companies like ZenSpace and Switch. ZenSpace, for example, resembles a large public phone booth, and is set up in malls as private, bookable units where you can get some work done in between shopping. Unlike ZenSpace, Flowspace is not designed to be a private unit, so its use may not be appropriate for public environments such as shopping malls and hotel lobbies.

Instead, Flowspace could be a good way to offer workers at a company location the pseudo-privacy of owning a cubicle while combining the collaboration features and agility of hotdesking. Alternatively, within larger offices, Flowspace can also serve as a personal video conferencing space given the large screen, speakers and relative built-in privacy the design provides. This eliminates the need to build smaller conference rooms for video calls.

It’s unclear whether Microsoft intends to commercialize its design concept, or whether other companies will adopt some variation of Flowspace’s design to revamp the modern office once people start returning to work.
