Left-wing elected officials and SNCF agents who mobilized to protest on Monday in Perpignan asking the government and the SNCF to stop for a year the recirculation of the “early train” between Perpignan and Rungis. “It is an aberration in green. It is better to have one train than 50 trucks on the roads,” said Jean-Christophe Sellin, regional councilor for Occitania, a recalcitrant France.

Until July 2019, the “early train”, made up of refrigerated wagons, transported fruit and vegetables produced in the Pyrénées-Orientales to the Rungis market every night. On Monday in Perpignan, dozens of people protested at the Saint-Charles station at the call of the CGT, asking for a change of route.

The cargo transported by trains, up to three per night, is now brought to Rungis by trucks that will load boxes of peaches, apricots, strawberries and the Saint-Charles de Perpignan station, a logistics platform. In October, the Secretary of State for Transport, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, announced the restart of rail transport for fruit and vegetables by the end of 2019.

But instead of SNCF, a private company, bringing the goods to Rungis, Novatrans had to take production from Roussillon, always by rail, to the Valenton (Val-de-Marne) multimodal platform. The Secretary of State outlined a “gradual reduction in the quantity of goods” and a “change in demand.” But this new railway modality was not implemented.

It represents an environmental problem and a social problem, in terms of employment, is a deviation in the economy”. For the regional counselor, “we need to build ecology with strong public companies. We do not understand this confusion.”

Michael Meusnier, a former train engineer, is concerned about the “policy of social dumping (which) has lost the skin of SNCF Freight. Rail freight is a matter of general interest.” He regretted that the private actors were replaced by SNCF.
