An estimated 500,000 cubic meters of ice fell, according to local authorities who set up a red zone.

The commune of Courmayeur in the Italian Alps announced this Sunday the “revocation of all safety measures” adopted to deal with the danger of a large block of the Glacier de Planpincieux collapsing, where the situation has returned to normal.

The latest information that the glacier has “confirmed the return to normal risk parameters”, the closure of the Val Ferret valley (below the glacier), ordered last Wednesday, has been lifted, announced by the town hall in a press release. Automobile traffic through the small valley is allowed again, and about fifteen evacuated residents can return to their homes.

A volume of ice estimated at 500,000 cubic meters – the size of Milan’s cathedral’ – had been spilled, according to local authorities who on Wednesday night ordered a 72-hour evacuation as a “red zone” of several hundred meters far down in the valley is uninhabited and mostly visited by hikers this summer season.

In the Aosta Valley, the small valley of Val Ferret is located near the famous resort of Courmayeur and the entrance to the Mont Blanc tunnel, between France and Italy. The area in question was, however, at least four miles from the tunnel entrance, and even more from Courmayeur, where the situation had remained perfectly normal in recent days.

“Evacuation was necessary and unavoidable”

“The evacuation was necessary and unavoidable due to the refrigerator at risk,” Courmayeur City Hall repeated once again this Sunday. The warning caused a misunderstanding of the locals and reviews of numerous tourism workers, worried about the impact on the activities of those who have just recovered from the Covid-19 epidemic.

The threat of the glacier’s collapse “was localized and affected a small part of the territory (commune), while in the rest of that same territory, the valleys and the municipality of Courmayeur, tourist activities are taking place, in absolute normality”, stressed the mayor, regretting the passage of “whistleblowers” media.
