In their latest attempt to regain relevance to the NBA, the Detroit Pistons have taken a risky move. Detroit and former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams have reached an agreement, according to two people familiar with the matter. Williams has agreed to a six-year deal, one of the sources told The Associated Press on Wednesday night, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal has yet to be made public.
Phoenix fired Williams two weeks ago, a year after he was named coach of the year and two years after the team reached the NBA Finals.
The Suns, which have been eliminated in the Western Conference semi-finals two years in a row after falling to Milwaukee in the 2021 NBA Finals, are led by 51-year-old Williams, who has won 63 percent of his games in four regular seasons with the team.
Under Dwane Casey, who stepped down as coach with a year left on his contract to take the head-office position, Detroit lost 30% or fewer games for the fourth straight season, while winning 17 games to lead the NBA last season.
