Mysterious Google Carrier Services app lands on Google Play, but what does it do?

Google playYmgerman/123RFI It looks like our Android phones might have another app pre-installed in the near future. In many cases, device manufacturers choose to have pre-installed apps available on the Google Play Store, so they can update individual apps instead of updating the entire system. Another such app, called “Carrier Services,” appeared on the Google Play Store.

According to the app’s description, the app “helps carriers deliver mobile services using the latest network capabilities,” including compatibility with the Android Messages app.

So what exactly does Carrier Services do? Well, right now, nothing. Android Police reviewed the app’s code and found that it only contains a dummy service, which simply means that it does nothing. In other words, the app gets uploaded to the Google Play Store, but it won’t actually do anything until Google updates it.

We could guess what the new app is about. Some reports suggest that it might have something to do with RCS or Rich Communication Services, which is an advanced communication style that supports HD phones, read receipts, better support for group chats, and more. It is essentially a futuristic version of SMS.

So what is the proper response to an app like this appearing on the Google Play Store? He apparently leaves funny reviews. One review says: “Once again, Google has achieved what no other country in the world can do. After updating this mobile service application, I can access any network in the world.”

Another says that “after a bit of experimentation,” you can “wave charge your phone” by putting it in a microwave oven. Pro Tip: Under no circumstances should you put your phone in the microwave unless you want to risk a fire and a burnt phone on your hands.
