He further stated: “His paternal grandfather, David Oliver, turned on the gas oven and then hanged himself in front of his children, who were just six and four, apparently because he was distraught that my great-great-grandmother had left him… Howard, Nana’s father managed to save himself and his younger brother by breaking a window.”
Ashley continued: “Howard, on the other hand, married an alcoholic party girl named Edie Mae Burton, who repeatedly cheated on him. When Nana was nine years old, her father was found in the bathroom with a bullet in her head; It seemed like a suicide, but everyone suspected Edie and her boyfriend.”
Ashley went on to add: “Edie left shortly after the funeral, leaving Nana and her two younger brothers with their stiff and intimidating grandmother, Cora Lee Burton. Nana grew up along with her brother and her sister among a group of misfit adult aunts and uncles who still lived at home and worked at her grandmother Cora Lee’s restaurant, the locals’ favorite Hamburger Inn.”
