Meet Neneki Lee, Laphonza’s butler’s wife
Neneki Lee is the wife of Laphonz Butler, president of Emily’s List and who filled Diane Feinstein’s Senate seat. The married couple has been together since at least 2009, but they intend to keep the details of their private life away from the public eye.
However, we do know that the couple are parents to one daughter, Nylah, who is 8 years old.
The 44-year-old Laphonza is the first openly gay senator from California. Her career spans business, intellectual, government and labor spheres. She worked for Airbnb as director of public policy and campaigns before joining Emily’s List, an organization that promotes the election of women to public office.
Prior to that, she was a partner in the political consulting firm SCRB Strategies, which is now Bearstar Strategies, and had as clients former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and then-Sen. Laphonza also chaired the Service Employees International Union Local 2015 for more than ten years, representing more than 325,000 nursing and home care workers in California. The largest union in California and the largest union local in the country representing long-term care workers is SEIU Local 2015. She was also a key adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.
Gov. Jerry Brown selected Laphonza to serve as UC regent in 2018, a position she will hold until 2021. She has served on the boards of the Bay Area Economic Council Institute think tank, BlackPAC, and the Children’s Defense Fund, a national advocacy organization for children . She was a former member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve System of Los Angeles.
The California senator-elect also chaired SEIU Local 2015, a labor organization representing more than 325,000 nursing home and home care workers across the state. Prior to that, she was president of the SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW) for seven years.
Laphonza also oversaw the welfare of janitors, security guards, hospitality workers and others across the country as director of SEIU’s Division of Property Services. Laphonza Butler served as President of the SEIU California State Council as well as Vice President of SEIU International. She was a board member of the Bay Area Economic Council Institute, BLACK PAC, and the National Children’s Defense Fund.
Laphonza earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Jackson State University, a historically black university, where she told Mark Z. Barabak of The Times in 2021 that she was motivated by her professors, many of whom were involved in the civil rights movement.
After working as a labor organizer for nurses in Baltimore and Milwaukee, janitors in Philadelphia and hospital employees in New Haven, Connecticut, Laphonza moved to California in 2009.
