Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl: Beginner’s tips and tricks

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl it quickly became a fun alternative Smash Bros. It takes itself a little less seriously and lets you play with different characters that span the decades. Whether you want to fight as Toph from The Last Airbender or SpongeBob SquarePants himself, you can do it. Add support for up to four players and everyone can enjoy the game.

The problem is that with so many characters to choose from and a wide variety of styles to experiment with, it can be difficult for newcomers to know how they should play. These tips and tricks will help you get started and give you the edge you need to succeed.

Note: Before we get to the gameplay, please note that settings like health, life and so on can be changed in the settings. Feel free to adjust the game modes to make everyone feel comfortable with them.

Perfect your air returns

As with Smash Bros., this platformer is heavily focused on staying grounded – one of the most dangerous events for your character is being knocked off a platform or bullied over an edge. There are a few things you can do to deal with this, the most important being mastering your exhalation movements. This is generally a bounce or hover move that is specifically designed to help you get back onto the platform right after you land (usually some sort of jump combo, but sometimes attack moves as well). Recovery moves and their behavior, distance, etc., can vary greatly between characters, so when you pick up a new character start jumping and spamming moves for a while to get a feel for how it works.

Second, most stages have a primary platform(s) that will remain the same even if the rest of the map changes. Always be aware of where the primary platform(s) is so you know where to go back to if you’re ever in trouble.

Don’t underestimate blocking

Blocking is a lifesaver in more ways than one Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. First, blocking against an attack will greatly reduce the percentage of damage you take. If you see someone doing a powerful attack, you can block to save your life. Second, blocking has the unique ability to put you in fast fall mode. If you’ve just been thrown into the air or are floating a bit longer than you wanted, you can press the block button to land on a nearby platform instead. This helps avoid devastating aerial attacks that can knock you off the screen or put you at a disadvantage.

Practice your strong attacks

As the game progresses, powerful attacks become more and more important. These attacks — along with some types of special attacks depending on the character — have the ability to outright “kill” other characters by blowing them up… as long as their health percentage is low enough.

Practice with your powerful attack button and combine it with different directions to see how powerful the attacks are. Have at least one strong attack ready to go when your opponents start to reach low health and become vulnerable to the kill move.

Know how to radiate a rush and crash

Air dashing (jumping, then aiming in a certain direction with an attack) gives you a lot of control over where you land (especially when combined with a shield drop). Get used to airstriking with purpose, choosing a specific platform or angle of attack – just sending an airstrike every time you jump or fall could put you in more danger than you started with. But time your airstrike right, and you could wreck an unwary opponent who is now in a bad position in the air.

If you jump and then immediately rush at an angle to the ground, you will perform a wave run, a kind of fast roll on the ground. This is very useful for evading enemy attacks and surprising them from behind, although it takes some practice to get it right. This is a way to stop the “dancing” that sometimes happens if you are timing accurately.

Confuse your opponents with special moves

Each character has their own set of special moves, often powerful attacks, projectiles or dodges that can give them an advantage. For example, Sandy Cheeks can use a Rocket Pack to jump extremely high, and the Sheriff can lasso a nearby enemy for his next attack.

Special offers can be very powerful, but it’s important not to spam them. As you learn how to use your specials, mix them in with your normal attacks to keep people guessing. Otherwise, other players will quickly learn how to avoid or counter your specials, and you’ll be more disappointed than you should be. Over time, you will learn which special forces take advantage of the situation.

Choose a character to master

When you’re ready to master your favorite character, start combining their dashes, recoveries, specials, and attacks to see what works best. You’ll quickly see that some characters are strong at range, some are strong up close, some work well at mid-range, and some are just a lot weirder than others. If you’re not comfortable with a character, you might be using them too far or too close — or you’re not taking advantage of some of their more unique, nimble moves. For example, every character has at least one or two dashes that you should know when you’re comfortable.

Get aggressive with missiles

IN All-Star Brawl, the best way to deal with projectiles is to get in their face. Attack the projectile at the right time (your basic stationary quick attack is good at this) and it will bounce back in the opposite direction. Or you can use your throw move to catch it and then release it at a specific opponent. This can only be done twice, after which the projectile will be boosted and invincible, so watch out.

In confidence, uppercut

Uppercut moves are a great way to start juggling against unexpected enemies, and even new players will be able to use this to their advantage. Find some uppercut moves and be ready to use them against an unwary opponent for the best results. Once they’re in the air, you can quickly hit them again, grab them for an aerial throw, or set them up for another player’s attack.
