Nicole Baldwin is an award-winning innovator, philanthropist, serial entrepreneur, and United States Army Veteran (OIF/OEF). She was serving in the US Army when she decided to start her skincare brand, Biao Skincare (alternate name Biao Cosmetics and Enterprises, Inc.). According OpenCorporatefounded the company in May 2019.
According to her bio on the Women’s Economic Forum, Nicole started her company while serving in Afghanistan, in a barracks bathroom using a recipe inspired by her grandmother. She did all of this behind a computer desk.

Nicole grew up in chaos and by the time she was 16 she had lost seven friends in a shootout. She needed a fresh start and she moved into her family home in Houston. During morning class, her teacher turned on the TV and said, “America is under attack,” it was the 9/11 incident.
When the army recruits came to his school, out of curiosity, he talked to the recruits about life in the army. He ended up taking a test called the ASVAB in downtown Houston. Her mother supported his decision and he joined the Army’s split option program.
Four months after graduating, Nicole got a job as a gunner, a job responsible for maintaining and operating a unit’s weapons, and went off to war. Her first engagement was in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003. She also worked toward a bachelor’s degree in business administration, all paid for by Army Tuition Assistance.
Later, Nicole was sent to Afghanistan. It was then that she came up with an idea and she started working on creating a product. To promote her product, she launched a website and made her first sale in February 2012. Four months later, she had sold $75,000 worth of product.
Nicole left active duty in 2012 after 13 years of active duty. She retired with the rank of sergeant. After leaving the military, she worked at an engineering firm in Houston to finance her business.
She eventually quit her day job to go back to school and become a licensed esthetician. She approached Shark Tank with the idea, but was met with rejection. She stopped selling and reconditioning. The company ceased operations for four years.
Nicole had courage, determination, and self-discipline, traits she learned in the army. She turned out to be crucial in starting a business. They saw promise and Nicole attended the Stanford Ignite certification program, then she moved to New York to attend the Veterans Future Lab, a business incubator run by New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering.
Nicole sought investment for a reinvented Biao that would transform it into a skincare and subscription technology company. A group of seven investors offered $150,000, while Houston offered $750,000. She expected $750,000 in revenue the year she started the business and expected to earn $2 million in sales after that and grow the business by 15 percent a year.
