Meet Noelle Bergener’s father, Christopher Nance
Noelle Bergener’s father, Christopher Nance, was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey. He grew up in the idyllic town of Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula. He grew up feeling isolated. Her father was a US Army colonel who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and the family moved frequently to the United States and Europe.
In one of his books, Christopher wrote in the foreword: “I was always the new kid in school. It was hard for me to make friends because he was so shy.”
Noelle’s father was five years old when he was diagnosed with sickle cell disease. People with this disease were expected to die.
Once he thought of a statement his mother had made. She told him: “So there are God’s laws and there are human laws. Just because a man says you’re going to die doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. God decides who you are and how long you live.”
He was discharged from the hospital every year until he was 10 years old. For the first three years of his life, his father denied paternity. However, the court determined with a DNA test whether he agreed to pay $400 a month in alimony.
A source close to Christopher said of Noella: “She’s a gem and he doesn’t even see her,” says another source. “There’s a real irony here. He made all this money from children’s books, and I doubt he ever read the story to her own daughter.”
Noella was the only child of Christopher Nance. Since Christopher was born with a death sentence, she used his illness as an excuse and license and never thought about the future. She also excused his failure as a father for the same reason.

Christopher Nance graduated from Santa Clara University with a BA in Political Science in 1976. He was the first black student body president of a Jesuit university. He thought about law school, but found himself working in restaurants, selling shoes and doing comedy in Bay Area clubs.
In 1979, after a stand-up performance at Cannery Roq, he was approached by a television executive. “It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life,” the man told Nance, whose account was published in the official magazine of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. “We need minorities in front of the television cameras, call me.”
Christopher spent the next four years doing news and weather for KMST in Monterey, followed by two years at KPIX in San Francisco. In 1985, NBC4 hired him to do weekend weather here, eventually moving to the weekday edition of Today in LA, the city’s first and longest-running morning newscast, when he got sick again, this once losing his gallbladder, his mother said. “Who manages his personal finances?” She challenged him to reexamine his faith.
In her hospital bed, Christopher vowed that if she survived, he would write a children’s book. She published her first book in 1995 and by 1999 she had published six more.
