The iPhone 14 Pro Max has been my daily driver since it launched in September, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. From the always-on display and Dynamic Island to the top-notch camera system, it’s hard not to like it. But I haven’t used the iPhone 14 Pro Max alone. Shortly after finishing the review, I quickly tossed it to the Nomad case. And I didn’t look back.
Specifically, I’m talking about Nomad’s Modern Leather Case. I often like leather cases for any smartphone, and my iPhone 13 Pro has lived in an official Apple leather case since last year. But this year I decided to go with the Nomad option and it was a decision I couldn’t be happier with.

Nomad has two versions of its Modern Leather Case to choose from: Leather and Horween Leather. The first is a cheaper option that Nomad created with Danish leather tannery Ecoo. It’s real leather, but it uses computer controlled tanning and has a more pristine finish. Horween leather, on the other hand, is traditionally crafted by hand and has a more natural look that doesn’t resemble perfectbut it looks much more natural.
It’s the Horween leather case you see on my iPhone 14 Pro Max in Rustic Brown. These photos were taken after daily use of the case for just over a month and as you can clearly see the patina is in full force.
What the new Nomad Horween leather case looks like a Nomad
Although I forgot to take a photo of the case as soon as I received it, the Nomad image above is an accurate representation of what Horween’s leather case looks like out of the box. There are very subtle natural features if you look closely, but for the most part it is a clean, well presented piece of leather.
It’s very well made, but fast forward to over a month of regular use, and the case becomes even more beautiful.

You see visible signs of wear everywhere you look in my box. The leather is noticeably darker, there are visible scratch marks along all edges and countless scratches/dents throughout the case.
Ecco leather doesn’t skate as quickly and keeps its appearance longer out of the box. If that’s his preference, it’s great that Nomad has that option available! But I want my leather case to carry the story of him on the sleeve, and the Horween finish certainly does that.

Aside from the good looks of the leather, I was also very impressed with the durability of the Nomad’s case. I have dropped my iPhone many times while it was in the case: on the carpet in the living room, on the wood in the kitchen, and on the asphalt in the parking lot.
That’s thanks to a TPE bumper that wraps around the Nomad’s leather case, offering protection against drops of up to 10 feet. I was initially concerned about the TPE (rubber) frame. From all-Apple leather case last year, having a part made of TPE felt like a step down. But in practice I was quite grateful for it, mainly because it absorbs the impact of a fall much more gracefully. Last year, the leather on my Apple case started to peel in one corner after a particularly nasty drop. Even after big drops with my iPhone 14, I have no such issues with the Nomad case.
MagSafe compatibility is also present in Nomad’s Modern Leather Case. MagSafe is on by default for both leather finishes and it works exactly as you would expect. I had no trouble connecting the Apple Leather Wallet to the MagSafe or its MagSafe charger. MagSafe accessories install with confidence and stay there until you’re ready to remove them.

There isn’t much more to say about Nomad’s iPhone 14 leather case. Looks amazing, gets better with age without sacrificing durability. And if you opt for the basic leather finish, Nomad’s case is $10 less than Apple’s official one, while Horween Leather’s is $10 more.
So is it worth it? I would say it absolutely is. While I wasn’t immediately sold on the TPE bumper, it didn’t take me long to convert and appreciate the added sturdiness it provides. I also think splurging on Horween leather is 100% the right choice. It looks stunning, the patina finish is class leading, and it still has that glorious leather scent that ties the whole package together.
