Nvidia is serving up a major price cut on its best GPU

Good news: Nvidia just dropped the price of its best graphics card. However, there are some caveats. The RTX 4090 price adjustment is only happening in Europe, and only the Founders Edition GPU is affected.

In total, the RTX 4090 is now 9.2% cheaper than at launch. Is Nvidia suddenly feeling generous?

There’s a lot to be said for the RTX 4090, but most people wouldn’t exactly call it cheap – it launched with a starting price of $1600 in the US, Europe was worse from the start as the GPU started in a whopping €1950. Due to the weakening of the US dollar, the price has been falling steadily ever since.

In February, Nvidia dropped the price of the Founders Edition RTX 4090 to €1,860, followed by €1,820 in March and finally €1,770 in May. Based on today’s exchange rates, that’s the equivalent of almost $1,950. European customers may also notice some price differences depending on their country; As an example, VideoCardz reports that the GPU will cost around €1,790 or €1,780 in Spain or France, but German buyers will be able to benefit from the projected MSRP price.

Price cuts are always nice, especially when you consider Nvidia’s typically outrageous pricing strategy. However, it’s hard not to notice that Nvidia is just following in the footsteps of its board partners. Non-Founders Edition GPUs are already significantly cheaper in Europe. Palit leads here, offering the RTX 4090 for €1,670.

Nvidia may have had no choice but to lower the official MSRP due to the exchange rate, but demand could also play a role. Most consumers hardly need the RTX 4090, and the latest generation cards are still enough for many gamers, so demand will never skyrocket. The GPU market is also experiencing a large decline: Jon Peddie Research reports that in Q4 2022, GPU shipments were down 15.9%.

Can US buyers expect a price cut for the RTX 4090 or RTX 4080, given the drop in demand? Not too long ago, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claimed that falling GPU prices were “a thing of the past.” As we can all see, that turned out to be wrong, at least in Europe. But Nvidia isn’t usually very keen on offering discounts, so it could be a while before we see similar tweaks in the US and the rest of the world.
