With this generation of GPUs, we are once again seeing great advances in CUDA cores, as well as additional next-generation RT and Tensor cores that help deliver faster ray tracing and better DLSS. Clock speeds have also increased significantly, which will help deliver the big performance improvements Nvidia promised.
It seems that the added efficiency of the new architecture in the new 5nm process has allowed Nvidia to increase core counts and clock speeds dramatically while maintaining the same power requirements as the RTX 3090 Ti. Pricing and Edition
The RTX 3090 went on sale in September 2020, shortly after the flagship RTX 3080. It was initially priced at $1,500, but it has fluctuated wildly over the past two years, occasionally rising to over $3,000. As of this writing, you can buy it for around $900 at most retailers.
The RTX 3090 Ti launched in March 2022 with a debut price of $2,000. The scarcity at the time meant it could cost $4,000 in some cases, but prices soon dropped and today it can be found for as little as $1,000.
The RTX 4090 first debuted at Nvidia’s GTC keynote on September 20. It was officially released on October 12, priced at $1,599. The same goes for Port Royal, where the RTX 4090 offers truly nice frame rates and a corresponding score that shows how much better it is at ray tracing than any card before it.
Across the full range of gaming benchmarks, the RTX 4090 continued to far outperform every other GPU we’ve put it up against, including venerable flagships from just a few weeks ago. The RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti are still standout cards, especially when it comes to 4K gaming, but the RTX 4090 trumps both of them.

The graph above shows that the RTX 4090 averages over 50% more frames per second than the RTX 3090 Ti across our range of games tested. Most impressive is the performance boost we saw in 4K on the ever-so-demanding cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing on. There, the RTX 4090 was the only card to manage more than 30 frames per second (fps) in the low 1%, ensuring a lag-free gaming experience.
This is with DLSS disabled, so you can expect much better performance than all Nvidia cards tested with that setting turned on, but this shows the raw capabilities of the card without all the technical wizardry Nvidia has pulled off in recent years.
Overall, the performance of the RTX 4090 is incredibly impressive, and it is undoubtedly the fastest GPU ever made. However, that’s not the two to four times performance that Nvidia claimed in its original report.
Characteristics
Like the 3090 Ti and 3090 before it, the RTX 4090 supports ray tracing and DLSS. Plus, thanks to more RT and Tensor cores and next-gen hardware, compared to the previous generation, you see a huge jump in performance when one or both are enabled. Nvidia talked about its new DLSS 3 algorithm in GTC, showing that it can lead to a huge performance boost when enabled.
