Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti may be more affordable, but will it be a good value?

Nvidia’s RTX 4070 was only launched a few days ago, but rumors are swirling that Team Green already has another GPU coming out soon — the RTX 4060 Ti.

Reportedly scheduled for release in May, the GPU could be much cheaper than the RTX 4070, but even that price cut may not be enough to compete with some other high-end graphics cards.

According to RedGamingTech on YouTube, the RTX 4060 Ti should launch at a price of $450. If this turns out to be true, the card will be a whopping $150 cheaper than the recent RTX 4070. It will also cost $50 less than the RTX 3070 at the time. On the other hand, if you compare it to the RTX 3060 Ti, this new model will cost $50 more, as the Ampere counterpart arrived with a price tag of $400.

Overall, this is pretty consistent with what Nvidia has been doing recently in terms of pricing strategy. Still, spec-wise, the RTX 4060 Ti might turn out not to be such a good value.

According to the leak, the RTX 4060 Ti is said to come with a 5nm AD106 GPU, which is the same one Nvidia uses for the laptop version of the RTX 4070. This version will be scaled down a bit though. The RTX 4060 Ti reportedly has 4352 CUDA cores, while the mobile RTX 4070 has 4608 cores.

We’re probably looking at a clock speed of 2.535MHz, which is more than decent. However, Nvidia is sticking to a limited amount of VRAM — the RTX 4060 Ti could only come with 8GB of memory over a 128-bit bus. Again, this is no surprise.

These specs, if proven correct, should deliver performance that is slightly better than the last-gen RTX 3070. Some of the most popular Ampere cards are currently quite overpriced, so it would still be a better deal than buying an RTX 3070, even though the last-gen cards are still they can be a solid buy.

For a GPU that’s likely to stay strictly in 1080p territory, $450 seems a bit steep, no matter how you look at it. AMD’s RX 6700 XT costs around $370 and can probably deliver similar performance, albeit without Nvidia’s impressive DLSS 3 technology.

Given the fact that the RTX 4070 is readily available at retail, the RTX 4060 Ti could still see a slight price cut. Let’s hope so, because while $450 is nothing when you look at the rest of the Ada Lovelace line, it might be a bit much for a 1080p GPU.
