Nvidia’s RTX 4090 Ti may be on the way, but do we really want it?

Nvidia’s most common information source, kopite7kimi, has just shared the specifications of the rumored RTX 4090 Ti GPU. Said to be even more powerful than the RTX 4090, Nvidia’s latest product would surely top any list of the best graphics cards.

However, it may not be the best GPU of this generation. It seems that Nvidia has another ace up its sleeve that would defeat even the RTX 4090 Ti. But do we really want these two monster GPUs?

The successor to Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Ti pushes the specs even further than the RTX 4090. According to a Twitter tipster, the RTX 4090 Ti would come with 18,176 CUDA cores, which means it would still be a stripped down version of the AD102 GPU (the Full GPU has 18,432 cores). Compared to the RTX 4090, this means an increase in the number of cores, increasing the number by 1792.

The memory module is also said to be upgraded at 24Gbps (versus 21Gbps on the RTX 4090), which equates to a total bandwidth of 1152GB/s. Kopite also lists a total board power (TBP) of 600 watts, but it’s hard to tell if he means motherboard power or maximum board power. It seems more likely that the GPU will simply allow a 600W power cap, similar to the RTX 4090, due to the same shared 16-pin power connector. That’s right, the same one that tends to melt.

Kopite7kimi is known to correctly detect many graphics cards in the past. While this still needs to be treated with a healthy dose of skepticism, it’s safe to assume there could be some upsides as well, especially when you consider the fact that we’ve been hearing rumors about the RTX 4090 Ti for months now.

Whenever we heard about the RTX 4090 Ti, the question always arose as to whether Nvidia would release a new Titan card in its place. We’ve heard rumors of a quad-slot GPU that could be the RTX 40 Titan, with telltale gold accents on the heatsink design. Another leak, this time from MEGAsizeGPU on Twitter, seems to confirm the existence of such a card.

A Twitter user shared images of a massive Nvidia card fitted with a PG137 PCB. This is something Kopite has mentioned in the past, calling the card a “beast”. The specs don’t quite add up assuming the RTX 4090 Ti will also be available: both GPUs are said to have 18,176 CUDA cores. On the other hand, the Titan GPU is said to have 48GB of 24Gbps GDDR6X memory; an unprecedented amount. Also, the total power of the board is said to be 800W, which is crazy.

This is not what the market needs right now.

These leaks are, of course, exciting. Potentially we could get not only an RTX 4090 Ti, but also an RTX 40 Titan, both of which would be extremely powerful. Still, one wonders: do we need these graphics cards now?

The $1,600 RTX 4090 rarely sells for MSRP as things stand now. The $1,200 RTX 4080 serves as a good way to encourage more people to buy the RTX 4090, as the flagship is simply a better deal, despite being seriously expensive. Then there’s the RTX 4070 Ti, trading blows with AMD’s less desirable RX 7900 XT.

It seems to me that the high end of the market is quite saturated. We have plenty of “beast GPUs” in stock, and the RTX 4090 is powerful enough to handle all games. I’m not sure what the point of an RTX 4090 Ti or RTX 40 Titan would be in a gaming scenario right now, aside from some serious testing for the future.

What the market needs is more mid-range GPUs that are still somewhat reasonably priced – the equivalent of the entry-level RTX 3060 and RTX 3070. These next-gen graphics cards continue to sell well, and that’s because they still suffice, while the current Gen stuff is priced high.

Will Nvidia release the RTX 4090 Ti and RTX 40 Titan? It seems impossible, but the rumors seem to point in that direction. However, that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon. It really makes more sense for Nvidia to focus on more affordable cards before releasing more products that fall firmly into the ultra-high-end segment.
