Ohio teen live-streams friend’s sexual assault on Periscope, gets indicted

periscope producer live streamAn 18-year-old Ohio woman has been accused of using Twitter’s Periscope video streaming service to broadcast the rape of her 17-year-old friend. Marina Lonina did nothing to help the minor while the attack was taking place, instead she took an affirmative step and broadcast the incident live to her followers. Lonina and the attacker, Raymond B. Gates, 29, are charged with two counts of rape, three counts of sexually oriented pimping involving a minor, and one count of kidnapping and sexual assault.

The rape was reported by one of Lon’s friends, who was on the side of Periscope Creek in a completely different state, and who reported the assault to authorities. Prosecutor Ron O’Brien says it’s unclear how many people may have seen the video. He further noted that this is the first time in Franklin County, Ohio, that a crime of this type has been broadcast live.

At the time of the incident, O’Brien says Gates, Lonina and the victim were drinking, after which Gates forced himself on the 17-year-old. Because alcohol was involved in the situation, the prosecutor noted that the victim’s ability “to resist or consent was greatly diminished.”

O’Brien also attributes the live broadcast of Periscope to Lonina’s drunkenness. In a statement, he concluded that “alcohol is responsible for the stupidity of what was done with the live broadcast.”

If convicted on all counts, Gates and Lonina could face more than 40 years in prison. Lonina faces an additional charge of “unlawful use of a minor in material or performance directed at nudity,” for allegedly taking nude photos of the victim the night before the attack.

Periscope has already put some people in “hot water”: In February, a woman got a six-month driver’s license suspension and 150 hours of community service when she went live while driving drunk.
