A court recently ordered Nigerian singer, Oxlade, to pay N5 million in damages to a young woman, John Blessing, after he secretly recorded and posted an explicit video online.
The sentence was handed down by Judge Olalekan Oresanya, who described Oxlade’s actions as “despicable, appalling, disgusting and classless”.
The incident took place in 2021 and caused a stir on social media, with the leaked video quickly going viral. Blessing, who was the other party involved in the video, felt violated and filed a lawsuit against Oxlade for invasion of privacy and damage to her reputation.
During the trial, Blessing’s legal team argued that the leaked video not only caused her emotional distress, but also had a significant impact on her career and personal life.
On the other hand, Oxlade’s defense argued that the video should never have been made public and was only shared accidentally. However, the court found that Oxlade was responsible for intentionally recording the video and posting it online.
Judge Oresanya affirmed that the right to privacy is a fundamental human right and must be respected by all people. He added that it is unacceptable for someone to secretly record and play explicit content, especially without the consent of the other party. The judge also noted that the leaked video could have lasting effects on Blessing’s reputation and career, thus the N5 million award was justified.
The ruling was welcomed by privacy advocates and members of the entertainment industry who believe it sends a strong message to people who engage in similar practices. Many praised Blessing for taking a stand and fighting for her rights, as well as the court for taking a strong stance against privacy violations.
On the other hand, Oxlade has not yet publicly commented on the court’s verdict. It is not clear if he plans to appeal the decision or accept the compensation awarded.
